New Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
April 27, 2018

Every once in a while I manage a new treat. This time it’s some new glass.

One lens I didn’t have in the cabinet was a Macro. Canon offers two L series Macros, the 185mm and the 100mm. The 185 is a beast, heavy, long and a really nice lens if you are into using a tripod and shooting Macro only with it. The 100 2.8 that I bought is much lighter and more compact though you are giving up 85mm in focal length. It is engineered plastic but still feels sturdy. The Image Stabilization (IS), fast f/2.8 and lightness allow this lens to be used hand held. Of course a tripod used when shooting still life macros in a controlled setting will deliver the sharpest image, the ability to grab and go is a huge plus.

I’ve used this lens now on a couple of outings and I love it. I haven’t shot any specific Macro shots yet, but this lens is really versatile for Street Photography. You can be a fair distance from a subject and get in fairly close. That’s the beauty of the 100mm. At the Macro end of the range you can get right up on a detail within a scene and isolate some neat subjects. On my photowalks I tend to focus in on the little details in a scene so this lens is perfect for me. The images, both close and far are really sharp and the bokeh is soft and velvety.

It’s going to be a fun spring as I get to know my new friend.
